A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national projects. They were built at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
